Honda Super-One: A Pocket Rocket EV for Japan

We recently had the opportunity to pilot one of the most exciting electric vehicles not destined for American shores: the irresistibly charming Honda Super-One. Our time behind the wheel of this compact EV left us with a lasting impression of pure, unadulterated fun. The Super-One is an evolution of the Honda Super EV Concept that made a memorable appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It later emerged as a prototype at the Japan Mobility Show and is slated for production, with a Japanese market launch in 2026. Following its debut, it will be introduced to the U.K. and other right-hand-drive regions. This release strategy means a North American launch is not in the cards, but we savored our exclusive test drive at Honda's proving grounds in Tochigi, Japan.

A Kei Car and So Much More

The Super-One is a performance-focused model within Honda's electric N-Series lineup, serving as a high-powered variant of the N-One e Kei car. However, this dynamic hatchback boldly steps beyond the traditional Kei car classification. Engineers have given it an exclusive chassis, extending its wheelbase and widening its platform by approximately two inches. This enhanced footprint allows it to house a single electric motor that produces significantly more power than the 47-kW (63-hp) cap imposed on standard kei cars in Japan. While official specifications remain under wraps, it's clear the Super-One packs a considerable punch. Onboard instrumentation visible during our drive included a battery temperature gauge and a display for simulated engine RPM.

An Agile and Playful Performer

This front-wheel-drive hatchback was born for spirited driving on winding roads. Thanks to its lightweight construction and compact dimensions, it delivers an exhilarating, go-kart-like experience on a technical handling course. The vehicle demonstrated remarkable stability through high-speed curves and tight switchbacks, eagerly pivoting into corners with precision. The 15-inch tires would squeal in protest when pushed hard, adding to the thrill of the drive. While a small amount of body roll and a hint of understeer were present at the limit, the responsive and accurate steering made the car feel nimble and easy to control. Our initial laps left us wanting just a little more straight-line acceleration.

Unleashing the Fun with Boost Mode

Our desire for more power was answered with a feature developed exclusively for the Super-One. For our subsequent laps, a Honda engineer activated Boost Mode via a blue button on the steering wheel. This system not only unleashes extra power from the motor but also transforms the driving experience by engaging a step-shift control program. This feature emulates the distinct gear changes of a seven-speed transmission, complete with satisfying virtual blips between shifts. An Active Sound Control system further enhances the sensation by playing a synthesized engine note that rises and falls with acceleration. Although these auditory and tactile cues are simulated, they brilliantly amplify the car's fun-loving character.

A Look Inside

The cabin of the Super-One is sporty and minimalist. Drivers are held in place by sport seats featuring a striking asymmetrical pattern with a bold blue fabric stripe. The interior is defined by a small-diameter steering wheel and a clean dashboard layout with digital screens. Taking advantage of its electric platform, the battery is located under the floor in the center of the chassis where a gas tank would normally reside, contributing to a low center of gravity and stable handling.

A Tantalizing Treat We Can't Have

Honda has stated that the Super-One is aimed at Japanese buyers in their 50s and 60s, who might one day pass the vehicle down to their children. With its future limited to right-hand-drive markets, the chances of seeing it in North America are nonexistent, at least until it becomes eligible for import under the 25-year rule. Our brief time with the Super-One was a lucky glimpse at a truly delightful package of personality and performance that we will admire from afar.
